Is my child ready?

We are often asked, “How do I know if my child is ready for kindergarten?”

If your child has turned 5 years of age on or before August 1, then he/she may be enrolled in kindergarten, but deciding to send your child to school at age 5 versus waiting until age 6 can be a tough decision, especially for summer birthdays.  Readiness is a combination of age and individual growth and experience.  Having basic physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills in place will determine your child's readiness for school.  How will you know if your child is ready?  Here is a list designed to serve as a guide:

  • Knows the difference between letters and numbers

  • Can count to 10

  • Can use the restroom without assistance

  • Eats lunch without assistance

  • Can button their clothes and dress themselves

  • Plays well in a group

  • Can communicate with a teacher

The literacy  component of school includes the ability to speak, read, write and listen. So encourage your child to read daily, talk to your children, allow them to write and or color and encourage play over TV!
